An exceptional example of Azzedine Alaïa's celebrated late 1980's tailoring, this sculptural black velvet jacket appeared on the F/W 1989 runway, worn by Beverly Peele. Executed in sumptuous velvet, the jacket exemplifies Alaïa's unparalleled ability to sculpt the female form through cut alone. Precision seaming draws the waist inward while softly structured shoulders create a strong, architectural silhouette. A high standing collar frames the neckline, while contrasting matte trim traces the front closure to accentuate the jacket's elongated lines. Finished with glossy button fastenings and discreet flap pockets, every element is considered, refined and unmistakably Alaïa.
Created during one of the designer's most influential periods, this is an increasingly scarce early runway piece that captures the restrained sensuality and immaculate construction for which Alaïa became renowned.
